Level 3 Fashion Academy

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ariane Bourneville

The Fashion Academy offers the Level 2 National Certificate in Clothing Manufacture and a pathway into the Creative Industries.

This two year course offers both level 2 and level 3 credits and provides students with training on industrial sewing machinery, an experience of tertiary study at NZ Fashion Tech and some work experience within the local fashion industry.
The course is very practical and the students are on the sewing machines daily, refining their skills and always learning new ones. Students will leave with two years of industrial sewing experience, placing them well ahead of other fashion students of the same age group.
Our Year 13 students take part in a short course at NZ Fashion Tech over 6 days, where they learn to sew a tailored shirt, pockets, collars and sleeves. NCEA credits are gained from this course along with an experience of tertiary study. This helps prepare our students for further education in the field. A bus is provided into the city and back on the days the students attend. In class the students continue to build their skills by designing and creating a traditional Japanese kimono, a lined skirt, a formal occasion garment of their choice, and a second bag or luggage piece. There are 42 Level 3 credits offered in this course.
Our goal is for our students to finish the course with confidence on industrial sewing machinery, an experience of tertiary study and some work experience within the local fashion industry, which provides them with references for future work opportunities.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

All the academies are fees free, which includes some bus transport. However, some have a uniform cost.

Recommended Prior Learning

At Level 3 it is expected that students have completed the Level 2 academy successfully.
