Year 9 English

Year 10 English is a foundation course that prepares students for success in NCEA Level 1. It builds essential literacy, critical thinking, and communication skills through a wide variety of engaging texts and activities.

What students will do:

  • Study a diverse range of texts including short films, feature films, poetry, novels, short stories, and non-fiction. Students learn how to identify and analyse key aspects such as ideas, techniques, language features, and structure. These are core skills for senior English.

  • Read and understand texts independently and collaboratively, using strategies to explore meaning, purpose, and audience.

  • Write and craft texts across a range of forms including essays, creative writing, and responses to literature. Students will refine their planning, editing, and proofreading processes.

  • Learn key terminology and language, tailored to the text type (for example, film techniques, poetic devices, narrative structure) to ensure students are equipped for Level 1 assessments.

  • Develop grammar and core literacy skills, including spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and paragraphing. These are essential for clear and effective communication.

  • Complete a range of assessments such as film technique tests, literature essays, and written responses.

Students will also be supported to prepare for the Literacy CAA (Common Assessment Activities) in both reading and writing, with targeted teaching designed to build their confidence and success in these nationally recognised assessments.
