Level 1 History
Course Description

Level One History will offer all four new standards for a total of 20 credits, half of which are available through internal assessment.
1.1 AS92024 Engage with a variety of primary sources in a historical context Internal 5 credits
1.2 AS92025 Demonstrate understanding of the significance of a historical context Internal 5 credits
1.3 AS92026 Demonstrate understanding of historical concepts in contexts of significance to Aotearoa New Zealand External 5 credits
1.4 AS92027 Demonstrate understanding of perspectives on a historical context External 5 credits
Course Structure:
Students will examine a range of topics which may include:
- Civil Rights in the United States of America and Aotearoa New Zealand
- the Origins of World War Two
- New Zealand’s anti-nuclear stance
Recommended Prior Learning
A passing grade in Year 10 Social Studies (overall mark) or an ASTTLE reading age of greater than Level Four. A reasonable level of literacy and a willingness to work is required. No prior knowledge of history is required.
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
2B5/2B6 hardcover exercise book preferred, otherwise 1B5 or refill in a folder will suffice, however students are welcome to keep their notes electronically / digitally on a laptop instead of in a book, using OneNote. A mobile phone device will not be sufficient for note-keeping.
Pathway
Level One History naturally leads into Level Two History at Year 12, which builds on the skills covered in Year 11 but with different context. Students may also wish to select Level 2 Classical Studies 201 in Year 12. Many History students also complement their Year 12 and Year 13 courses with Geography.
Students considering a career in law, politics, journalism or any research / communication based pathway should consider taking History.
Credit Information
You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.
