Level 1 Dance
Course Description

Choreography
Students will focus on compositional components implemented via a range of dance styles. Exploration of the elements of dance, choreographic devices relating to one or more dancer and developing an understanding of choreographic tools to create personalised movement in response to a given theme and/or idea.
Dance Performance
A study of dance techniques developing strength, flexibility, agility, co-ordination, safe dance practices, functional anatomy, endurance, mobility, performance qualities, interpretation via a range of dance styles from contemporary, hip/hop and jazz.
Dance Perspectives
Students will study the features and background of a selected dance style /genre. Component may focus on the analysis of chosen professional dance company/choreographer from either N.Z. or overseas. Students will learn to “read”, interpret and understand dance as a language in performance.
Dance is now looking at ways to use dance to assess English and Physical Education standard. The standards are:

1.3 Demonstrates quality movement on a perform of a physical activity
Recommended Prior Learning
Study of Dance in Year 10 desired and/or competent dance experience in any given dance style. A high level of motivation and good attendance is essential or at the discretion of the Head of Department in exceptional cases.
