TCCOM1

Level 1 Computer Science

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: J. Gottschalk.

In this course you will learn how to write programs in Python.  We will also learn how to create a website that is powered by a database.  You will learn about ‘Usability’ (ie: how to ensure that everything you make is easy to use).

You can take TCDTI1 (as well as TCCOM1).  Doing so will allow you to earn a total of 25 credits over both courses (this includes two unit standards). If you take both courses, you will only be able to earn subject endorsement for one of the courses due to the overlap in Achievement Standards.

Recommended Prior Learning

No prior learning is required.  Students who enjoy Mathematics (especially algebra) are strongly encouraged to take this course.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Students need headphones that have a standard headphone jack so that they can access the sound in the video tutorials.

Pathway

This course leads on to COM201 and COM301 where students deepen their skills and create more complex outcomes. Many of our COM301 students opt to do Computer Science at University / become software engineers.
Having a background in Programming and Computer Science leads to exciting careers. Digital specialists are not only in demand, but the skills learned can be used in any country in the world without needing to recertify / retrain (as is the case with other professions).

Assessment Information

Students who also do DGTEC1 will be strongly encouraged to complete US25659 (create a visual website with html).
