Level 1 Resistant Materials Technology
MPTR1 Course DescriptionTeacher in Charge: J. Crawford.
Recommended Prior LearningYear 10 Wood/Metal Technology preferred or with approval of the HOD of Resistance Materials Technology.
This course follows on from Year 10 Wood and Metal Technology.
Students will work with a range of hard materials; solid timber, timber products, metal, acrylic and more.
Economy of time, material and effort is encouraged - upcycling and repurposing supported and embedded in the Assessment Projects offered.
Students will gain through experience an understanding of the properties of materials and develop the skills to manipulate them to produce high quality outcomes.
There is a strong Design component as part of MPTR1 - Students have the opportunity to develop and grow their design decision making, drawing skills that communicate their design ideas and construction detailing.
Student Projects are driven by the individual's design decision making.
Students build their own designs and take the final product home.
Resources include traditional timber and metal workshop environments as well as an opportunity to use a laser cutter and 3D printers.
Students will be assessed on their understanding and execution of basic technological processes and their application of health and safety within a workshop environment. Resistant Materials Technology is an approved University Entrance subject.
Course Overview
Term 1
The Term begins with a series of small projects to generate familiarity with a variety of materials, hand tools and machinery.
This introductory phase will culminate with a quick fire design, draw and build task!
The rest of the Term Students will get underway with an Internally assessed project - MPTR1 92012 'Develop a Materials and Technology outcome in an authentic context'. Students are to create a fit for purpose outcome for a real client - it's all about authenticity, a real outcome for real people.
This will run into Term 2
Term 2
With completion of Term 1's Project Students will get underway with MPTR1 92013 - Experiment with different materials to develop a Materials Technology outcome.
This will involve exploring the properties of different materials, creating a purposeful outcome and incorporating engaged stakeholder feedback to refine the use of materials to create a purposeful outcome.
Term 3
Students continue with their 92013 Project through until the internal Exams at the end of Term.
Term 4
Students will complete any outstanding project work.

Level 2 Resistant Materials Technology
MPTR1 can be a pathway to the to Level 2 Resistand Materials Technology or the Building Academy programme.
