Level 3 Fashion and Beauty Academy. Two hours a day.

ACFAS3
Course Description

Teacher in Charge: A. Bourneville

Recommended Prior Learning

At Level 3 it is expected that students have completed the Level 2 academy successfully.

The Fashion and Beauty Academy offers the Level 2 National Certificate in Clothing Manufacture, if this has not been gained in the first year and a pathway into the Creative Industries. The academy runs two hours a day everyday.

In 2022 we are hoping to introduce a Hair Dressing and/or Make Up component to the course. (Hence why Beauty has been added to the title of the previous name Fashion Academy). Details are still being sorted but it is hoped that a tertiary provider can be used to supply standards in this area of Hair Dressing and/or Make Up and it will be a practical component. These Hair Dressing and/or Make Up courses, might run in the holidays in 2022. If so they would be voluntary. Transport costs would be provided by the academy to get to the organisation.

This two year course offers both level 2 and level 3 credits and provides students with training on industrial sewing machinery, an experience of tertiary study at Whitecliffe Fashion Tech and some work experience within the local fashion industry.
The course is very practical and the students are on the sewing machines daily, refining their skills and always learning new ones. Students will leave with two years of industrial sewing experience, placing them well ahead of other fashion students of the same age group.
Our Year 13 students take part in a short course at Whitecliffe Fashion tech over 6 days, where they learn to sew a tailored shirt, pockets, collars and sleeves. NCEA credits are gained from this course along with an experience of tertiary study. This helps prepare our students for further education in the field. Transport is provided into the city and back on the days the students attend. In class the students continue to build their skills by designing and creating a traditional Japanese kimono, a lined skirt, a formal occasion garment of their choice, and a second bag or luggage piece. There are 42 Level 3 credits offered in this course.
Our goal is for our students to finish the course with confidence on industrial sewing machinery, an experience of tertiary study and some work experience within the local fashion industry, which provides them with references for future work opportunities.
