Recommended Prior LearningNo prior learning needed just a desire and interest to be involved with small scale construction projects. All the projects will involve gaining credits to Level 2 NCEA and include safety training, safe power tool use and other guided training.
This course is for all females who are interested in the Trades, particularly in building. It will be an all-female small group, learning renovation building skills and safe practices. It does not require any prior knowledge.
It is open to students from Yrs 11, 12 or 13.
The course will be overlaid on the weekly timetable for one day. This means that for the one day a week, students will come out of their school day and spend all day on the building site under the guidance of our female building tutor. They will need to arrive at school for that one day a week in their safety uniform. (Details for this, hi vis top, safety boots or shoes etc, will be given out later. Students will need to buy these items).
All academy students need to complete an AWVA Academy Application form.

Girls who were part of this academy in 2024, can be part of it again in 2025, but will need to discuss this with Mr Hackett to confirm that there are different standards to complete.
Please note that students already in an academy at MHS will most likely not be able to be in another academy. This is due to Ministry funding rules. However, if this is the case please still apply as funding situations can change.
Course Overview
Term 1
Details will depend on the current building situation on site, but all students will be given safety training in both power/hand tool use and site safety training. They will undertake building projects such as, fence building, paving etc. Most of these standards are Level 2 but some are Level 1.

Assessment Information
Safety boots and Hi Vis construction vest, will be needed to be purchased by the students. The standards and credits above are a guide only but are correct at time of publication.
