Recommended Prior LearningPrevious study not required but previous experience in wood would be an advantage.
This course covers skills in communication, maths, quality standards, workshop procedures, job specifications, health and safety, materials knowledge, hand tools, power tools, and operating fixed machinery. This will lead students to the Carpentry Academy (Yr 12), and the Building Academy, (Yr 13).
The course will consist of projects, for example making a set of steps and a coffee table. This course runs one period a day each day for five of the six day timetable. This class can be combined with the Multi Skills academy. Female Yr 11 students might also like to select the Girls in Carpentry course, which is open to Yr 11 female students.
Term 1
Understanding Workshop and Class Safety procedures. An introduction to the correct use of basic Hand and Power tools. Demonstrate an ability to make joint and fastening systems. Maintain journal of planning and reflection.
Acquire knowledge of elementary Planning and Specifications. Incorporate 3D drawings for further explanation.
Unit Standard 24352 (v3, 2 credits) Demonstrate and apply knowledge of Safe working practices. Use PPE during the construction of a BCATS project.
Demonstrate several samples of jointing systems. - "Beginner Woodwork" Frank Wilkins.
First of 4 projects (Planter Box) to begin.
Term 2
Completion of first project with photo verification.
Second project to start (Computer/Tea Tray) Demonstrate timber selection then laminating and and jointing systems for finished product.
Unit Standard 24536 (v3, 8 credits) Apply elementary workshop processes for a BCATS project.
Unit Standard 25920 (v3, 3 credits) Use joints for a BCATS project
Term 3
Completion second project ( photo and reflection required)
Third project -Coffee Table- underway. Planning and timber selection. Double jointing systems required.
Unit Standard 25355 (v3, 4 credits) Demonstrate knowledge of construction and manufacturing materials used in BCATS
Term 4
Unit Standard 31512 (v1, 2 credits) Demonstrate knowledge of BCATS trades involved in the construction of a residential building.
Completion of fourth project.

Level 2 Carpentry Academy Full Time
This course is a great introduction for students who are interested in the Trades, particularly for building.
All Academy and Pre Academy courses are fees free.
Students in the Building Pre-Academy can wear the black Academy polo shirt instead of the normal MHS shirt and blazer. Black Academy polo shirts can ONLY be purchased from the MHS Academy offices. No other type is allowed.
