Level 3 Fabric Technology

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs L. Van Westrene

Students design for a special occasion. This occasion must be held near the end of the year. You will learn how to draft a pattern from personal measurements. You will create your own pattern and instructions on how to make your designed garment. Students also learn how to use specialty fabrics eg Satin, Sheers, Lace, Velvet, Sequins.

The achievement standards in this course are on the approved list for university entrance.

Course Overview

Term 1
Students take detailed measurements and create a cardboard Pattern block which reflects their body shape. This shape is then cut out with a seam allowance added. This is then stitched together and fitted on them. Any corrections are made. At the same time students are working on their portfolio which is a record of all their research and steps towards a final brief. In this term they need to choose a possible occasion and start to research specialty fabrics.

Term 2
Once specialty fabrics are chosen, possible designs are explored and availability of fabric is assessed a final choice is made. Students next learn pattern making using quarter scale, before embarking on making their own pattern from their cardboard block. The next step is to make a mock-up of their garment out of similar fabric to check fit and style features. Once completed and fitted a final pattern complete with instruction sheet is produced.

Term 3
Portfolios up to writing a brief is now completed. The final garment can now be constructed. Before the end of term the students start on their external which is a report on their years work.

Term 4
Students complete their external and other incomplete work.

Recommended Prior Learning

Must have successfully completed Level 2 NCEA Technology - Fabrics or by arrangement with the HOD.
Note - Students taking this course as well as COM301 or IMD301 should note that there may be some duplication of Technology standards between the courses.

A4 ringbinder and plastic pockets.
