SCI102

Level 1 Science 102

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: J. Skevington

Science is essential for so many career choices and pathways into further qualifications. It also helps to explain the world around us and understand how and why things happen. It helps us to make good choices and be an active and informed part of society.

This is a course for students who have a preference for internal assessment and have found Year 10 Science challenging. Sci102 has 24 credits on offer and is broken up into small units which are assessed throughout the year. There is the possibility of one external assessment that could be offered to selected students who may be close to subject endorsement.

The course covers aspects of Science, Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science and Horticultural Science. A lot of what we learn is practical based and is linked to real life examples and situations.

Most students will move into Sci202 from this class when they are in Year 12 and the Sci302 in Year 13 (which is a University Entrance subject). Some students can carry on to do Science 201, Earth and Space Science 201 or Biology 201 but this is dependent on their Sci102 grades and their teachers recommendation. This course is not for students who wish to study Physics 201 or Chemistry 201 in Year 12 as it does not prepare them for these courses.

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT
Internal - assessments, (6 internal NCEA standards).
External - exam (1 external NCEA standard). Selected students only.

Recommended Prior Learning

Students will be directed to SCI102 by their Year 10 Science teacher or the HOD based on work in Year 10. Students cannot take this course with Sci100 or Sci101.
