MUS201

Level 2 Music

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: N. Baldwin

This course develops three main areas of your musicianship: Performance, Composition and Musicology (the study of Music Works). You will be assessed for your skills as a soloist as well as in a group situation. You must be learning from one of our itinerant teachers if you do not have a private teacher. You must be prepared to perform in front of an audience. For Composition you will develop writing for an ensemble, with a focus on larger scale works. Music theory and aural skills are also an important part of the course.

Note that students can select this course if they have not taken MUS101 but must come and see the HOD, Mr Baldwin and perform for him to ensure they are suitable to take this course.

Recommended Prior Learning

NCEA Level 1 or sufficient prior learning in Music at the discretion of the HOD. To cope at this level a student must be learning an instrument for at least full three years and/or be at a grade 4/5 performance level. To cope with other areas of the course a student must be able to read music fluently and have the theoretical and aural skills taught at level 1. For students who have not completed level 1, the theory level required is at least grade 3.
