Students should select Level 1 Mathematics as an option and they will be divided up into L1MATE (external), L1MATI (internal) or L1MATN (numeracy at HoF discretion).

Whichever Maths option a student is placed into will be based upon their performance in 10MAT and their own preference as follows:

L1MATE is for students who enjoy Mathematics and who may wish to study Calculus and Statistics at NCEA Level 3. The course consists of Level 1 Mathematics and Statistics achievement standards including the external standards in AS91028 Tables, Equations and Graphs, AS91037 Chance and Data and AS 91027 Algebra Mathematics Common Assessment Task (MCAT). Completion of L1MATE is a pre-requisite for entry into L2MATE. A student can gain a subject endorsement from this course.

L1MATI is for students who do not wish to study Calculus at NCEA Level 3 but may wish to take Statistics. The course consists of Level 1 Mathematics and Statistics achievement standards and in some cases AS91027 Algebra Moderated Common Assessment Task (MCAT). Successful completion of L1MATI is a pre-requisite for entry into L2MATG. Exceptionally, students who have done well at L1MATI may gain access to L2MATS. A student can gain a subject endorsement from this course.

L1MATN is for students who do not wish to study Mathematics beyond Year 11. The course will provide the 10 credits necessary for students to gain an NCEA Level 1 certificate and its Numeracy component. A student cannot gain a subject endorsement from this course.

Each course will consist of a maximum of 20 credits from a selection of the 14 Mathematics achievement standards at Level 1.

Recommended Prior Learning

Two years of secondary Mathematics and teacher recommendation.
Note that students will be placed in Mathematics classes for Year 11 based on their work and results from Year 10.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Graphics calculator (recommended) or scientific calculator, ruler.
