Course Description

In this course you will learn how to write programs in Python and create a database that is linked to a website. We will also explore how algorithms work and use our own algorithms to solve everyday problems. Our external involves exploring how compression actually works and this will allow us to make smart decisions about how we compress files (and then use these files in real world outcomes).

METHODS OF ASSESSMENT
Four of the assessments are assignment based and internally assessed. Achievement Standard 91887 is externally assessed.

RELATIONSHIP TO NATIONAL CERTIFICATE/TERTIARY QUALIFICATIONS
COM101 is one of two, computing and digital technology, level one courses. This course leads to two digital technology level 2 courses (DTI201 and COM201) and then onto two level 3 courses within this field (DTI301 and COM301)

Headphones which plug into a standard headphone jack (not Apple) for accessing sound in tutorial videos.

Pathway

This course can lead on to COM201 or DTI201 and from there to COM301 / DTI301. Students with a background in Computer Science / Programming are well placed to continue on to University or to find work in the well-paying IT industry (which currently has a worldwide shortage of trained professionals).
