Course Description

This course is for ESOL students and supports language acquisition across all subject areas through developing basic skills. Literacy skills is a focus as we prepare students for the new NCEA Level 1 Literacy assessments. Students will be using language acquisition programs such as Quizlet and Reading A-Z to maximise growth in their English. Students who achieve at level 2B or below in year 9 English or at ELLP Stage 2 (English Language Learning Progressions) or below will be directed to take this course to give them extra support in English and their other subjects.
Course Overview
Term 1
Topic based study, including vocabulary, grammar, the 4 skills of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.
An assessment on 1 of the 4 skills will be given towards the end of each term.
Term 2
Topic based study, including vocabulary, grammar, the 4 skills of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.
An assessment on 1 of the 4 skills will be given towards the end of term. There will be an NCEA Level 1 Speaking assessment included.
Term 3
Topic based study, including vocabulary, grammar, the 4 skills of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.
An assessment on 1 of the 4 skills will be given towards the end of term.
Term 4
Topic based study, including vocabulary, grammar, the 4 skills of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.
An assessment on 1 of the 4 skills will be given towards the end of term. There will be an NCEA Level 1 Wriing assessment included.

Students may be placed in this class as a result of testing.
