ACDE11

Level 1 Engineering Pre-Academy.

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: N. Hackett.

This academy operates at Level 1 and takes place one hour every day. The students are introduced to mechanical engineering skills and techniques. This academy is the first step towards an engineering apprenticeship or a career in a similar field. The academy will lead directly to the Automotive Academy in Year 12 and 13. Both academies are in the Manufacturing and Technology sector.
Students will gain skills in basic engineering workshop techniques including, cutting, marking out, measuring, joining, assembly, and finishing of metal products. The students will build a fully working model steam engine as part of the course.
All the standards covered in this course will contribute to the Level 1 NCEA qualification plus students will have the opportunity of gaining the National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering Technology (Level 1).

Students doing this course should also consider doing: Graphics, Maths (compulsory), Physics or Science, and English (compulsory).

Recommended Prior Learning

Entry and commitment from students. All students who wish to apply for this academy must indicate their choice of the Level 1 Engineering Academy Pathway on the MHS Pathways online course selection.
Level 1 Engineering Academy students do not complete an AWVA application form.
Students will need to be committed to maintaining their attendance at 95%.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

AWVA academies are “fees free”. Students in the Yr 11 Engineering Pre-Academy can wear the black Academy polo shirt instead of the normal MHS shirt and blazer. Black Academy polo shirts can ONLY be purchased from the MHS Academy offices. No other type is allowed.

Pathway

Students should have preferably done Technology Hard / Resistant Materials in the Junior School. This leads to Automotive Engineering at Level 2. Other possible pathways to associated trades such as Carpentry, (full time Yr 12), is also possible.
