Girls in Carpentry

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: N. Hackett

This course is for all females who are interested in the Trades, particularly in building. It will be an all-female small group, learning renovation building skills and safe practices. It does not require any prior knowledge.

It is open to students from Yrs 11, 12 or 13.

The course will be either 1 or 2 hours a day each day. Please select 4 other options if selecting this course. We will confirm details later in the year.

All academy students need to complete an AWVA Academy Application form. This can be picked up from the Academy Offices or complete the form here online, save to your device then email to Ms Douglas, [email protected] .

Recommended Prior Learning

No prior learning needed just a desire and interest to be involved with small scale construction projects. All the projects will involve gaining credits to Level 2 NCEA and include safety training, safe power tool use and other guided training.

Assessment Information

Safety boots and Hi Vis construction vest, will be needed to be purchased by the students.

Pathway

There are outstanding opportunities for women in the trades. This is an area where companies are very keen to take on females who are interested in this pathway. Businesses who employ women in trades say that their attention to detail is second to none. According to BCITO, (Building, Carpentry Industry Training Organisation), female school leavers who enter apprenticeships earn $145,000 more than their university counterparts by the age of 30. So if this interests you select this exciting new course.
