ACAUT2

Level 2 Automotive Academy - Year 1. (Yr 12) Single line option.

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr C. Thompson.

There is now a garage type set-up at MHS and students will be trained, over the two years, in doing pre-WOF service type work, tyre changing and balancing and using the hoist to change filters etc. The below description generally is accurate but changes will be happening to align the training to an apprenticeship type of course, in consultation with MITO, (Motor Industry Training Organisation) for 2024.

The AWVA Automotive Academy is offered over two school years. Two hour course in Yr 13 and one hour in Yr 12. The course work is taught in partnership currently with MITO.  In Yr 13 students also attend Unitec (1 day per week over 18 weeks at the Unitec campus in Year 13).

Students will also be encouraged to be part of the Evolocity Electric Bike Competition group.
Year 12 Automotive is made up of Level 2 standards and Year 13 is made up of Level 2 and Level 3 standards, some of which are delivered by Unitec at Mt Albert campus.
Highlight of Year 1
Students will build a mini motorcycle which they are able to take home on completion of the course, free of charge.
Highlights of Year 2
Students will attend Unitec, one day a week usually in Terms One and Two and work in the tertiary level environment. Also, students will build a motorized Go Kart at school. (There is a charge to cover the cost of the motor if students wish to take the Kart home when finished). There will also be practical work at Massey High School and through work experience opportunities.
Successful completion of this course can allow students entry into a Polytechnic Level 4 course in any applied technology such as Automotive, Engineering, Carpentry qualification, or assist in gaining an apprenticeship. Students will have the opportunity to gain the following certificates.
Level 2 NCEA endorsed with the Manufacturing and Technology Sector Vocational Pathway Award or
Level 2 NCEA without the vocational pathway award.

All students will need to: complete the MHS online selection process and have an interview with the Automotive tutor Mr Thomson or see Mr Hackett or Mr Tinling.

All academy students need to complete an AWVA Academy Application form.

This can be picked up from the Academy Offices or email to Sarah at [email protected].

Students and whānau will also have an interview with the academy tutor in November prior to the start of 2023.

Students will then be notified about whether they have been selected or not.
Places are limited in the academies and are not guaranteed until the application has been confirmed after the above.
Further information is available in the specific academy handbook.
