Year 10 Food Science and Technology

Course Description

This course will follow the New Zealand Curriculum for Technology and the main focus will be on processed outcomes. Most students work at Level 5 of the National Curriculum for Technology in the areas of Technological practice and Technological knowledge. The course will include three independent units of work, one of which will give the opportunity to gain Level 1 NCEA credits.

Unit 1- Food safety and food hygiene: A study of the micro-organisms that cause food poisoning and the procedures used to prevent food poisoning from occurring.

Unit 2 – Technological Knowledge, Materials: Baked products - Ever wondered why cakes sometimes sink in the middle or become like volcanoes? Ever wanted to make your own pastry or bread? In this unit you will learn how to make a range of cakes, pastries, bread and biscuits and understand why things sometimes go wrong.  

Unit 3- Technological Practice, Manufacturing: This is a Level 1 NCEA standard, looking at a multi-unit manufacturing process to make a batch of products which are all identical. This includes using quality procedures and specifications (4 credits)

Pathway

This course would lead on to Level 1 Food Technology which is an academic course aimed at preparing students for a career in food technology, food manufacturing, food science, sensory science, nutrition, product development and many more interesting opportunities.
